A website is not a standard product

If you request quotes for a new website, the offers often vary widely. That is rarely due to dishonest providers. It is because “website” can mean very different things.

The main cost factors

• Scope: how many pages and page types are needed?
• Content: will you supply copy and images, or should they be created?
• Features: forms, bookings, shop, members area?
• Languages: each language means translation, upkeep and testing.
• Design: custom design or an adapted template?
• Care: who handles updates after launch?

Do not forget running costs

Besides the project price there are costs for domain, hosting, licences and maintenance. Ask what is included in the quote and what is not.

Ask every provider to break down their quote by the same points. Only then can you see whether you are comparing like with like.
